About the Project India has 136 species of bamboo, and the North Eastern Region (NER)—though only 8% of the country’s land area— contains 28% of its bamboo resources, making it one of the richest bamboo zones. To harness this potential, JICA launched the Bamboo Use Promotion Project (2022–2026) with the National Bamboo Mission (NBM) and the North East Cane and Bamboo Development Council (NECBDC). The project strengthens the bamboo value chain and improves artisans’ skills in design and processing. Musashino Art University leads the design and branding component, collaborating with local producers and the National Institute of Design (NID) Assam. A JICA Volunteer also supports artisans by helping them adopt new techniques. Since 2024, production and branding workshops in Assam and Meghalaya have assisted artisan groups in transforming heritage crafts into marketable bamboo products that reflect local traditions and stories. .
